You can start tracking serialized inventory when you set up a new resource, or you can convert an existing resource’s balances and asset information to serialized inventory.
You can remove the serialized inventory tracking for a resource at any time. Removing serialized unit tracking for the resource does not actually delete the resource’s units. The units are retained for historical reference on any resource transactions that referred to a unit. However, the historical units cannot be reactivated. If you decide to change the resource back to a serialized resource, a new set of units must be created.
Note: You should link your component assets to the resource using the non-serialized option before you create the resource units.

To Set Up Data for Serialized Resources That are Linked to Assets

This checklist outlines the steps to follow if you are setting up your component assets in APM and want to use serialized inventory. Follow the links for detailed instructions on each step.

Set up Component Assets

1.
Check how many of your components (units) are installed, uninstalled, being repaired, and in inventory.

Create the appropriate component assets. If your component assets already exist in APM, skip to step 5. When creating components you must set the correct asset status:
•
For components that you will install in the hierarchy (that is, units that are currently installed or in use), select an asset status that is ‘available for use’. This will allow you to install the component.
•
For components (units) that are currently in stock, select the asset status that is matched to the ‘spare’ inventory unit status for your site. This will tell the system to link the asset with ‘in stock’ units later on.
Note: Only assets with statuses that match the “working”, “spare”, or “awaiting repair action” inventory statuses will be linked to units during this procedure. Assets that you create with other statuses will need to be linked manually.

3.
If you have not yet done so, create component locations for each component that will be installed (working). See Creating a Component Location.
4.
For any assets (units) that are issued and installed or in use, install the components in the proper location in the asset hierarchy. For more information, see Installing a Component.

Create New Serialized Resources

Create the resource first as a non-serialized resource in the Resource Catalog. If the resource already exists in the catalog, skip to step 6. For more information, see Setting Up New Resources in Inventory for Repairable Spares.
6.
Create one or more warehouse items for the resource, in each of the warehouses where the resource is stocked. See Adding an Item to a Warehouse.
7.
Check the warehouse balances for each warehouse item and adjust as necessary. For example, you will need to ensure that the number of in-stock (spare) units is correct. Units that have been issued, and are installed (working) should not be listed as being available. See Adjusting Inventory Balances for Non-serialized Resources.
Note: If you have already activated serialized unit support for the resource, you can only adjust the stock for the warehouse item one unit at a time. If you need to add multiple units of stock, you may want to first de-activate serialized unit support and then adjust the inventory.
8.
Receive any in-transit units before the resource is converted to serialized units. This will ensure that units are created for these items. For more information, see Receiving Materials Transferred from Another Warehouse.
9.
Link the component assets to the resource, using the non-serialized option. For more information, see Linking Multiple Assets to Non-serialized Resources.
10.
Activate serialized inventory support for the resource. For more information, see Activating Serialized Inventory Support for Resources.
11.
Create the serialized inventory units. Inventory units are created and linked to assets that reference the resource. For more information, see Creating Serialized Inventory Units for Resources.
Note: Only assets with statuses that match the “working”, “spare”, or “awaiting repair action” inventory statuses will be linked to units during this procedure. Assets that you create with other statuses will need to be linked manually.
12.
If the system could not match the asset and unit statuses, you have some assets that were not linked to units, or extra units in stock that are not linked to assets. In order to link these items, you will need to do one of two things:
•
Change the asset status and then manually link the asset to an inventory unit. For example, if the status of a component asset is ‘awaiting restock’, you can stock the asset and change the status to ‘spare’. You can then link the asset to a stocked inventory unit.
•
Change the status of the inventory unit by issuing it, and then manually link the asset. For example, if the status of an asset is ‘repair on site’, you can issue a unit and give it the ‘repair on site’ inventory status. You will then be able to link the unit to the asset.

Create Suppliers and Supplier Resources

13.
Create suppliers and supplier resources for purchasing new units of the resource. If the suppliers and supplier resources already exist, skip to step 14. For more information, see Creating a Supplier and Creating a Supplier Resource.
14.
If you will be repairing units of this resource externally, create one or more supplier resources for repairing the units. For more information, see Creating a Supplier Resource for Repairs.
