Any component asset or inventory item can be sent out for repairs. However, if a component asset has been linked to a serialized resource unit, you can track the status and repair history for that particular component. You can also track the status and repair history of inventory units that are not linked to assets.

When a serialized resource unit fails, you can repair it in place, or you can remove it from the location for repair and install a working unit in its place. When you remove a serialized resource unit to repair it, you must record the information for the remove and install (swap) in APM. Typically, this is done using a work order.

Whether you are using an internal or external repair process, you should create a work order to manage the repair process. The system can create a repair work order automatically, if this option has been set up on the resource.

If the unit cannot be repaired, you can change the status of the unit to Decommissioned after it has been returned to inventory. You can only decommission “inventoried units”. This is because when the unit is returned to inventory, the cost of the unit gets credited to the holding account.

To Swap Serialized Resource Units

1.	Create a work order to replace the failed unit.

If the unit is linked to a component asset, set the failed component as the asset to work on. If the unit is not linked to an asset, select a related asset in the hierarchy as the asset to work on.

This work order is not for the repair work. A separate repair work order may be created when you complete the swap.

2.	On the work order, plan the material requirement for the replacement component/unit.

3.	Finish planning the work, and send the work order for approval, or mark it as planned, as per your normal work order process.

4.	Create an issue transaction for the replacement unit. On the Issue dialog, you will need to select a New Status for the unit:

•	Replacement unit status (linked) = select Awaiting Installation

•	Replacement unit status (non-linked) = select Working

For linked units, once the issue transaction is posted, the information for the issued unit is added to the planned swap on the work order.

Note: If set up on the resource, the system may automatically create a repair work order for the failed unit when a unit of the resource is issued.

5.	Physically remove the failed unit, and install the replacement.

6.	For units not linked to assets, skip to step 7.

For units linked to assets, complete the component swap on the work order. If a repair work order was not created, create one during the swap.

7.	When the work is complete, close the initial work order.

8.	Once you have determined how the unit is to be repaired, start either the internal or external repair process.

9.	If the unit cannot be repaired, you can decommission it.
