Strategies for Testing Security Profiles and Settings

You can use the Preview mode to test individual profiles as you work on them. However, if you are setting up multi-site profiles, you must test your settings by logging in as a user with the default, home, top, and other site profiles set up. This is because the Preview mode only shows the effect of one profile at a time. If you are using different profiles for different sites, you might have different results than the Preview mode would indicate.

If you assign security profiles to your own APM user ID, you might find that you are locked out of the Security view, and will therefore not be able to continue. There are some ways that you can work around this limitation. The method that you choose will depend on how you have APM set up. In order to use some of these methods, you will need to have network administrator privileges, or to have someone with administrator privileges assist you.

Create APM Test Users

•	Have your network administrator create one or more “APM Test” users on your Windows network.

•	Then, create matching user IDs in the APM database. You will then be able to change the security profiles for the guest users, and log in using the guest user IDs to test your profiles.

Restore The Database From a Backup

•	After you have created the profiles that you want to test and before you give that profile to your user ID, create a backup of your database. Then, when you are finished testing the profile, restore the database. This will reset your user ID but keep the security profile that you have created.

•	If you have completely locked your APM user out using security profiles, you can always re-restore your original database; however, this will delete any security profiles that you have created.
