Defining a Safety Override on a Provision

A provision version’s safety override identifies the procedures that an operator or technician should follow when a safety device malfunctions in order to keep the facility operating safely while the device is being fixed or replaced.
When a safety device fails, an APM user (for example, an engineer, manager, or operator) creates an override incident in the system that records the details and recommendations.
For example, if a fill level sensor fails, a tank can overflow. The safety override identifies the process that the operator is to follow until the sensor is functioning again. The override could be to have someone monitor the tank level and shut off the intake valve when the tank is full.
Safety override functionality has two parts:

Defining and maintaining safety overrides
•
Reporting and tracking incidents when a safety override is used
In APM, an override definition contains a detailed description of the measures to be taken, a checklist of steps to follow, and the maximum amount of time that the override should be active. The override controls the type of work documents created when an incident is reported, whether the work document must be approved, and the employees who are notified when an incident is created in APM.

To Create a Safety Override

1.
Open the safety provision version and select the Overrides view. Ensure that Safety overridable is selected.

On the Override Details tab, provide the following information:
Setting Name
Description
Override maximum usage
Recommended maximum duration that the override is used for an incident. Typically, when the maximum is exceeded, an extension is required.
Override method
Examples of override methods are Manual Override, Programmable Logic Controller, and Distributed Control System.
Operating condition
Asset’s operating condition when the override steps are performed.
Measures to take
Description of the measures to be taken when an override is used.

Select the Condition and Approach tab.

Select a condition from the list and provide a description.

Select an approach from the list and provide a description. Override approach values identify the strategies for preventing or mitigating the hazard, for example, “Equipment protection”.

Select the Steps tab to add the steps performed when the override is used. Click New to add a step. The Override Step dialog appears:

Name the step and enter the details. Click OK to close the dialog and add the step to the table.

You can change the order of the steps using the Move Up and Move Down buttons. The sequence numbers change accordingly.

Select the Incident Options tab.
Note: If APM has been configured to interact with a SAP Plant Maintenance system, this tab is not available. Automatic creation of work documents is not supported when SAP interoperability is active.

Select options for creating work documents:
Setting Name
Description
Create work document
When an incident is reported, a work request or work order is created.
Document title
Title given to the work request or work order created when an incident is reported for this override.
Work type
Work types are site settings used to describe different kinds of work. For example, “Inspection” and “Repair” might be two work types that you use in your organization. This information is included in the work document.
Work classification
Work classifications are used to group work documents into categories relevant for the site. When you select a work classification for a work document, the list is filtered to include only those classifications defined as valid for the selected work type. The work type and classification are added to the work order created from the request.
Work priority
Work priority is a site setting that you can use to describe the urgency of work and the sequence in which it should be completed. For example, “Regular” and “Emergency” might be two priorities used in your organization.
Maintenance group
Employees who are maintenance workers are usually organized into maintenance groups. Work planners specify which maintenance group will perform the work on each work order task.
9.
Select the Incident Notifications tab. You can select employees to be notified when an incident is created for this override.
10.
Select the notification method (email, favorite, or both) and browse for the employees to notify.
Note: The employee records must have valid email addresses.
