Setting up Serialized Inventory Units Not Linked to Assets

You can work with serialized inventory without linking the units to component assets. This provides tracking of each unit’s costs and repairs. Asset life and status cannot be tracked with this method.

This checklist outlines the steps to follow if you are using serialized inventory, but are not linking the units to component assets. Most of the steps are similar to setting up units that are linked to assets. Follow the links for detailed instructions on each step.

To Add Serialized Resources That Will Not Be Linked to Assets

Create a Serialized Resource Asset Type

When you create a serialized resource, it must be linked to an asset type. If you are tracking serialized inventory that will not be linked to assets, you may want to create an asset type that is only for this type of resource. This will ensure that assets linked to another asset type are not ‘inadvertently’ linked to the resource. To create a new asset type, please see **Setting up Asset Types.

Create New Serialized Resources

2.	Create the resource first as a non-serialized resource in the Resource Catalog. For more information, see Setting Up New Resources in Inventory for Repairable Spares.

3.	Create one or more warehouse items for the resource, as necessary. Please see Adding an Item to a Warehouse.

Check your warehouse balances and adjust as necessary. For example, you will need to ensure that the number of in-stock (available) units is correct. Units that have been issued, and are installed or in use should not be listed as being available. Please see Adjusting Inventory Balances for Non-serialized Resources.

Note: If you have already activated serialized unit support for the resource, you can only adjust the stock for the warehouse item one unit at a time. If you need to add multiple units of stock, you may want to first de-activate serialized unit support and then adjust the inventory.

5.	Receive any in-transit units before the resource is converted to serialized units. For more information, see Receiving Materials Transferred from Another Warehouse.

6.	Activate serialized inventory support for the resource. For more information, see Activating Serialized Inventory Support for Resources.

7.	If you will be using an automated repair process, you can now select the Repair Process options for the resource. Please see Setting up Repair Cycle Automation.

8.	Create the serialized inventory units. For more information, see Creating Serialized Inventory Units for Resources.

Create Suppliers and Supplier Resources

9.	Create suppliers and supplier resources for purchasing new units of the resource. If the suppliers and supplier resources already exist, skip to step 10. For more information, see Creating a Supplier and Creating a Supplier Resource.

10.	If you will be repairing units of this resource externally, create one or more supplier resources for repairing the units. For more information, see Creating a Supplier Resource for Repairs.
