Setting up APM for Regulated Gas Management

Before you can record gas types and activities, you must configure Regulated Gas Management functionality in APM for your organization. This topic explains the types of options that are available and provides links to detailed information.

Identify Asset Types for Gas Management

Identify the asset types that support gas transactions and that represent the scales used to weigh gas containers.
For more information, see **Setting up Asset Types.

Define Indicator Templates

The first step in using indicators to monitor gas loss is to define an indicator template for each of the gas types you will create. When you enter an appropriate gas transaction (perhaps an in-service fill), APM uses the indicator template assigned to the gas type. If an indicator based on that template already exists for the transaction asset, APM enters a reading for the indicator. If an indicator does not exist, APM creates one, as well as the reading.
Your indicator templates might have the following features:
Indicator name: SF6 gas usage
Collection method: Manually entered. Although the indicator readings will be generated by the system, the collection method of “Manually entered” is used
States and alarms: Any numeric indicator with states requires two states. In this example, the first is called “Normal” and is defined with a “from” value of 0 pounds. The other state is “SF6 Loss” and has a “from” value of 0.25 pounds and an alarm state of “Warning”.
For more information, see Creating a Numeric Indicator Template.
When defining the transaction type, you will specify that an indicator reading is required and the transaction value used for the reading.

Define Gas Types

In regulated gas settings, define the types of gas tracked at your organization. Each gas type can specify a unit of measure, default container type, and site. You can also identify the template used to create indicators for transactions associated with the gas type.
For more information, see Setting up Gas Types.

Define Gas Container Types

Container types are used to identify the types of containers that a gas can be stored in, for example, bottles and cylinders.
Like gas types, container types are defined for the enterprise so that they are available at all sites. However, you can limit a gas or container type’s use by specifying a site on the type.
For more information, see Setting up Gas Container Types.

Define Gas Vendors

Gas vendors identify the suppliers of regulated gases that your organization uses. Vendors are associated with gas containers and scales.
If your organization uses the APM purchasing functionality (EAM product module), you can link vendors to purchasing suppliers that are recorded in APM.
For more information, see Setting up Gas Vendors.

Define Gas Transaction Types

Gas transaction types are essential to gas management. The transaction type determines the information required on a transaction, when the transaction can be created, and how the transaction is processed.
For more information, see Setting up Gas Transaction Types.

Define Employee Permission Groups

Employee permission groups allow you to control APM users’ access to specific functionality. In the case of regulated gas transactions, group members can select only the specified gas and transaction types when entering gas transactions. For example, the “Electrician” permission group might be restricted from entering gas recovery transactions for SF6 gas. When a group member creates a transaction, “Gas recovery” is not available in the Transaction type list and “SF6” is not available in the Gas type list.
Once the permission group has been set up, you can assign it to employee records on sites.
For more information, see Setting up Employee Permission Groups.
Note: We recommend using security profiles to identify employees who have the authority to perform actions. Employee permission groups allow you to fine-tune security by restricting access at a more granular level. For more information, see Security.

Define Gas Recovery Types

Gas recovery types identify the disposition of gas recovered from assets such as circuit breakers. Recovered gas can be either returned to the vendor or kept in inventory.
For more information, see Setting up Gas Recovery Types.

Define Emergency Event Types

Emergency event types identify events in which gas is released into the atmosphere. Event types can specify that a gas transaction of the selected type be created when the emergency event is entered.
For more information, see Setting up Gas Emergency Event Types.
