Recording Degradation Data on RBI Failure Modes

When recording failure modes on an RBI analysis, the analysis team can record information about the asset’s degradation pattern, mechanism, and so on. This information is often derived from historical data, theoretical analysis, and the informed opinions of team members.

To Record Degradation Data on a Failure Mode

Open the Maintenance Action Plan window and select the Degradation view.

Make sure that editing is enabled.

Select the Degradation Details tab. Here is an example from the damage mechanisms library:

Pattern
The degradation pattern is the form that the general damage mechanism takes, for example, cracking or external pitting.
A degradation mechanism is the type of deterioration that could lead to asset failure. Examples are corrosion, erosion, mechanical failure, and pitting.
Mechanism
A degradation mechanism is the type of deterioration that could lead to asset failure. Examples are corrosion, erosion, mechanical failure, and pitting.
Category
The degradation category provides a broad descriptor for identifying and grouping degradation types. Examples are environment-assisted cracking, mechanical and metallurgical failure, and uniform and localized loss of thickness.
Scope
The scope of the degradation typically describes the extent of deterioration. Examples are Localized-Internal and General-External.

In the Operating environment area, provide the following information:
Setting Name
Description
Temperature range
Range of temperatures in which the damage mechanism might occur.
Process
Process is an aspect of the operating environment in which the damage mechanism is prone to occur. Examples are hydrogen, phosphoric acid, and carbon.
Flow
Flow is an aspect of the operating environment in which the damage mechanism is prone to occur. Examples are motionless-static and hydrodynamic.
Load type
Load type is an aspect of the operating environment in which the damage mechanism is prone to occur. Examples are static stress, cyclic stress, and impact.
Degradation note
Provide a more detailed description of the asset’s degradation.

In the Details area, provide the following information:

Type
Examples of degradation types are age-related, non-age-related, and strategy-based.
Technology
Technologies are the means used to examine or test equipment for signs of wear.
Material type
The material type identifies the substance from which the equipment is made and which is subject to deterioration.
Theoretical yearly rate
Theoretical rate is the estimated rate of deterioration based on expert opinion, equipment specifications, or historical data. It can differ from the asset design rate based on the analysts’ experience and expectations.

In the Inspection details area, provide the following information:
Setting Name
Description
Inspection coverage
Inspection coverage is the percentage of the asset to be inspected. It can also be used to identify the percentage of indicators to be collected.
Location
Location refers to the area of the asset where the deterioration is most likely to occur.
Location note
Provide a detailed description of the location on the asset where deterioration is detected.

Select the Barriers tab to add means of slowing or preventing the asset’s degradation. For more information, see Adding Barriers to RBI Failure Modes.

Select the Representative Assets tab if the failure mode is assigned to the primary asset. The table on the left displays all of the assets on the analysis. Select one or more assets that best represent the failure mode. When you select an asset in this table, its information is displayed in the right-hand table.

If the team decides that no further analysis is required for this failure mode, select the Further Assessment tab and select Further assessment is not required. Add a note about the reasons for the decision.
