Tracking the Inspection Effectiveness of Indicators

The inspection effectiveness of a site’s indicators provides a measurement of the thoroughness, sensitivity, and efficiency of the inspection strategy, which can then inform your assessments of confidence and probability of failure when performing risk analysis.
When entering indicator readings, you can select inspection effectiveness values, as long as the indicators support it. (The indicator type enables the functionality and specifies a default inspection effectiveness value.) The Evaluate Inspection Effectiveness function reviews processed indicator readings that were recorded within a specified time period. Using the rules set up for the site, the function calculates the inspection effectiveness value for each indicator. You can run the function manually for the site or automatically using a scheduled action.
For more information, see Setting up Inspection Effectiveness Tracking.
Tip: You can update indicators’ effectiveness values manually. In the Site window, click the Tools menu, Inspection Management, and then Evaluate Inspection Effectiveness. Depending on the number of indicators evaluated, this process can take a number of minutes to complete.
Inspection effectiveness values are displayed on sites, indicators, templates, and readings. For example:
Inspection effectiveness and number of inspections are also shown on maintenance action plans with degradation rates that reference the indicators. Look for these values in the Degradation Rates, Confidence, and Implementation views. For example:
Number of inspections is calculated when the Evaluate Inspection Effectiveness function is run (manually or by the scheduled action). It records the number of readings that reference the inspection effectiveness value for the indicator.
Data loaders for indicators, indicator readings, and failure modes include inspection effectiveness values.
Note: Inspection effectiveness is not supported on measurement point readings or on readings collected using APM Remote or APM Mobile Inspections.
This topic explains how to view inspection effectiveness at the site and indicator levels.

To Track Inspection Effectiveness

1.
In the Site window, select the Inspection Management view and the Effectiveness tab. For example:
2.
Double-click an indicator to open its window. Select the Inspection Effectiveness view. For example:
Note the following:
Indicator area, Inspection effectiveness shows the indicator’s default value
Inspection effectiveness shows the calculated value based on the readings and the rules
Number of inspections shows the “Equivalent to” value that is responsible for the calculated value. This example uses a rule that says two “Fairly effective” inspections are equivalent to one “Highly effective” inspection
Last evaluated shows the date and time when the evaluate function was last run
Readings table lists the readings that were processed according to the rule’s Readings period setting
