Cascading Indicator Readings to Other Assets

Sometimes you might want to collect an indicator reading and apply it to more than one asset. For example, you might want to track the mileage on a truck but also record the same mileage on the truck’s child assets, such as the transmission and engine.

In APM, you can do this using cascaded indicators. With cascaded indicators, you can enter odometer readings once for the truck and this information is tracked on whatever other assets you assign to the cascade. A cascaded indicator gets its readings from another asset indicator.

Note: Only cumulative indicators, such as indicators that track mileage, operating hours, production, and so on, can be cascaded. Numeric, descriptive, and rule-based indicators cannot be cascaded.

The indicator that collects the readings and pushes them out to other indicators is called the “source” indicator. The indicator that receives its readings from a source indicator is called the “cascaded” indicator.

Normally, cascaded indicators use the same unit of measure as the source indicator. However, you can change the unit of measure to another one within the same category. When the readings are cascaded, they are translated into the correct unit of measure.

Each time a new reading is recorded for a source indicator and the reading is processed, APM updates the cascaded indicator. The cascaded indicator readings are processed the same way as for a normal indicator reading. This includes:

•	Evaluating any triggering rules based on the cascaded indicator

•	Evaluating alarms and alarm notification

•	Accumulating statistical values by financial period and asset life

You can set up cascaded indicators from either the source asset indicator or the cascaded indicator.

To Cascade Indicator Readings from the Source Indicator

1.	Open the asset that includes the source indicator (the indicator you want to cascade). Select the Inspection Management view, Indicators tab.

2.	Right-click the cumulative indicator and click Cascade to. The Cascade Indicator To dialog appears.

3.	Select the indicators to cascade to:

•	Apply this indicator to all descendants of this asset: automatically applies the cascade to all children of the asset.

•	Let me choose from a list of this asset’s descendants: displays a list of the descendants. Select the assets to apply the indicator to.

•	Let me choose from a list of all assets: displays all assets on the site. Select the assets to apply the indicator to.

Click OK. APM creates a new cascaded indicator on each of the assets you selected. If an indicator with the same name and indicator type already exists on a selected asset, APM asks you if the existing indicator should receive readings from the source indicator. To do this, click Yes. To cancel, click No.

5.	When you are finished, close the Asset window.

To Create a Cascaded Indicator

1.	Create the cumulative indicator on the target asset and set up the indicator information.

2.	In the Collection method list, select Collected from another asset. The Cascading tab is added.

3.	Select the Cascading tab.

4.	Select the source asset by clicking the browse icon. The Asset Selector dialog appears. Select the asset and click OK.

5.	Select the source indicator in the Indicator list.

6.	Save and close the indicator. APM adds the new indicator to the asset.
