Adding Operating Parameters to an Asset

On the asset record, you can record operating parameters for the asset. The parameters provide numerical information about the asset’s designed, actual, and integrity operating variables, including maximum and minimum measurements and measurement frequency. You can also identify the indicators used to track these parameters. The operating parameters are available in strategy development analyses for reference purposes.
Together, operating parameters constitute the asset’s integrity operating window, the framework of limits that prevent potential breaches of containment that might otherwise occur as a result of operation outside of the recommended limits. Operation outside the limits can result in accelerated damage to equipment from one or more degradation mechanisms, such as general or localized corrosion, mechanical or metallurgical damage, high temperature corrosion, and environmentally assisted cracking. Operation within the recommended limits should result in predictable and or reasonably low rates of degradation of equipment.
After the measurement details have been defined and the operating parameter has been saved, an Integrity Operating Window is displayed to show the measurements in a chart format. For example:
Note: A policy on the asset type definition controls whether operating parameters can be defined for assets of that type. If operating parameters are not supported, the Operating Window tab does not appear on the Asset window’s General tab.
This topic describes how to add an operating parameter.

To Add an Operating Parameter

1.
Open the asset. On the Properties view, select the Operating Window tab.

Click New. The Operating Parameter window appears.
3.
Provide the following information:
Setting Name
Description
Parameter name
Descriptive identifier for the parameter.
Integrity parameter
Indicates that the parameter is used to monitor the asset degradation.
Indicator type
Select the indicator type from the list and the appropriate measurement units are automatically determined for you.
Unit of measure category
The category for the unit of measure used to gauge the operating parameter.
Unit of measure
Unit of measure used to gauge the operating parameter.
Operations maximum
Highest value that the asset reaches for the operating parameter during normal operation. For example, a segment of pipe might contain fluid that reaches 30 degrees Celsius.
Operations minimum
Lowest value that the asset reaches for the operating parameter during normal operation.
Design maximum
Highest value that the asset is designed to reach for the operating parameter.
Design minimum
Lowest value that the asset is designed to reach for the operating parameter.
Integrity maximum
Highest value that the asset can reach for the operating parameter and remain within integrity limits.
Integrity minimum
Lowest value that the asset can reach for the operating parameter and remain within integrity limits.
Measurement frequency
Interval at which the parameter is to be measured.
Integrity window maximum
Determines the location of the vertical line in the integrity operating window graph to mark the maximum.
Integrity window miniumum
Determines the location of the vertical line in the integrity operating window graph to mark the minimum.
Indicator
Indicator used to track the parameter. Click the browse icon to select an indicator that uses the same unit of measurement category as the parameter. Click New to create an indicator from scratch or from a template.

Click Update Integrity Windows. The chart appears is updated and the integrity window maximum and minimum values are populated.

When you have finished defining the parameter, click OK. The Operating Parameter window closes and the parameter is added to the Operating Window tab.

At the bottom of the tab, you can select the pressure and temperature operating parameters that matter the most for this asset. The design pressure from the selected operating parameter can be used as an input in an APM degradation minimum value calculation. (If a pressure operating parameter is not selected on this asset, APM looks up the asset’s hierarchy to locate the closest ancestor asset with a selected pressure operating parameter.) You can also display the pressure operating parameter and temperature operating parameter in asset table configurations, reports, and custom UI panels.
Tip: When asset activity reports include this asset, you can open the operating parameter’s window and select the Activity Reports tab to view them.

When readings have been entered for the indicator used to track the parameter, you can open the parameter to view the Indicator Readings tab. For example:
