The probability of failure is the likelihood that the asset will fail due to the failure mode. Probability is usually described as frequent, probable, possible, unlikely, or remote.

Start of ETBF range

Probability of failure can be determined using the analyst’s estimate of the time between failures when no maintenance is scheduled for the asset. In this case, the analyst enters the ETBF on the Criticality tab of the Failure Mode window, rather than using the probability questionnaire. APM then assigns a probability score and name by comparing the entered value to the Start of ETBF range settings.

When this probability is assigned to a failure mode using the questionnaire or by direct entry, APM assigns the corresponding estimated time between failure to the failure mode.
